Bespoke Kitchens: The Questions Buyers Ask
If you are planning a bespoke kitchen, these are the questions we are asked most often at the Wimbledon showroom. The answers are ours — what we make, how we make it, what it costs and how long it takes.
How much does a bespoke kitchen cost in London?
A bespoke kitchen from Neil Norton Design starts at around £50,000 all-in. The final figure depends on the size of the room, the materials and finish you choose, and the appliances specified. Every project begins with a free design consultation and a detailed written quotation, so you know the full cost before committing.
What makes a bespoke kitchen different from an off-the-shelf one?
An off-the-shelf kitchen is assembled from standard-sized units, so the room is designed around the cabinets. A bespoke kitchen is the other way round: every cabinet is made for one specific room. Nothing we make is modular. Awkward corners, chimney breasts and period proportions are designed into the kitchen rather than worked around, and you are not limited to a catalogue of sizes and finishes.
Does Neil Norton Design make their own kitchens?
Yes. We design in-house at our Wimbledon studio, handmake every kitchen and piece of furniture in our own workshop in Ireland, and install in London with our own fitting team. We do not outsource manufacture or installation. Many London kitchen companies design and sell, then buy in the cabinetry — we make it ourselves.
How long does a bespoke kitchen take?
Manufacture alone takes a minimum of six weeks once your drawings are signed off, and the final survey takes place at least eight weeks before delivery. Allowing for design, revisions and a production slot, most projects run several months from first consultation to installation. You get dated milestones at the quotation stage.
Where is your showroom and when can I visit?
Our showroom is at 167 Arthur Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 8AD. We are open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5.30pm, and Saturday, 10am to 3pm. We are closed Monday and Sunday. An appointment is recommended so a designer is free to spend proper time with you.
What styles and finishes do you make?
We make classic and contemporary bespoke kitchens, including painted shaker, crittall-style and handleless designs. Our current finishes are spray painted and stained wood. We work in American black walnut, oak and other FSC-accredited timbers, natural marble, sintered stone, porcelain and specialist veneers.
Do you make furniture as well as kitchens?
Yes. Alongside kitchens we make fitted wardrobes, vanities, cabinets, pantries, boot rooms, media rooms, home bars, drinks and wine storage, shelving and tables — all handmade in the same workshop, to the same standard, and often as part of a whole-house project.
Which areas do you cover?
We are based in Wimbledon and work across South West London and the wider London area, including Chiswick, Chelsea, Fulham, Kensington, South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Notting Hill, Marylebone and Mayfair.
How do I start?
Book a free design consultation at the Wimbledon showroom. Bring plans if you have them, along with any images of kitchens you like. You will leave with an understanding of what is possible in your space and what it is likely to cost. There is no charge for the initial design and quotation.
Do you work with architects and interior designers?
Yes. We work regularly with architects and interior designers on private residential projects, making the cabinetry to their design or developing it with them. The client relationship stays with the designer — we are there to make and install the work.
